It will have to get catastrophic. As long as the powers that be still have any power at all, they will continue to make truth the fool - until they no longer can.

That's when it's gonna get rough. Gold will skyrocket all right, but so will anything with intrinsic value. Even copper will be sky high against the backdrop of hyper-inflated US Dollars nobody wants, and that's if they are even accepted at all.

Hard to say what the spark will be. Chances are it will take the world by surprise. If a guy doesn't already have his metal stashed away at that point, it will be too late.
