Yep. Gleason could really play. He grew up in pool halls.
If you really watch the Hustler, you can tell his shots aren't done by a double.
There is a funny story. Newman thought he was getting pretty good(being taught by Musconi) so he bet Gleason $50.
Gleason starts off with some incredible run(120-130 something)
Newman calls "uncle".
The next day, Newman paid him in pennies. LOL!!
