MIT Technology Review states : That it takes a concept 10 to 20 years to go from the laboratory to the shelf.

Making it economic and scalable are the major hurdles; there are many concepts proven in the labs which never make it to market for these reasons.

I wish I had the specific link...I'll keep looking in past issues...
