To a large extent, you are correct...the heartland believes the Repub party protects their gun "rights" and anti-abortion stand, without considering their economic situation.
At the risk of repeating myself, I recently spoke with a patient from W Va who is glad Trump was elected because "he promised to bring coal mining jobs back, and we need jobs"...she lives in Clay, W VA with an unemployment rate of 21.3%. She came to my area for care because Clay lacks the medical skills she needs. How does a Dem candidate talk to those people? - Hillary told W VA voters she would shut down coal mines...how'd that work out for the Dems?
If the Dems don't get back to being the party they once were and figure out how to talk to EVERY region of the country, they can look forward to elections like we just experienced and become a coastal party.
