Hmmmm, makes sense but how do we explain companies that have hundred of thousands of shareholders of record?

My old man and his old man were both union steelworkers. They each bought shares directly from the company with paycheck deductions. My Dad still keeps all of his and his dad's stock certificates in a fireproof lock-box under his bed (ever since I convinced him to move them out of the bottom drawer of the fridge). Both guys, along with every employee who participated, would be listed as shareholders of record.
