The 1984-1988 Pontiac Fiero was among the safest of small cars in its day in terms of crash safety, so a space frame can be plenty safe.
Was there something about the space frame Elio that they were unable to sell?
Are we really in a comfortable enough position that they can casually tweak the design?
Are the feds holding back ATVM loans because the car is not carlike enough?
At this stage in the game wouldn't it be best to just get to production, then use profits to switch to a more optimal design after a few years?
Was it simply time to commit to one type of factory tooling or another?
