simply wrong
PMI is historically been 99% used to insure any amount that is borrowed above 80% of value
so if you only put down 10% - and the bank that gives you a mortgage wants to sell it to F and F - you must buy PMI for that 10% (or pay say a point more in interest and the originating bank will take on that added risk)
PMI has no role in the 10s of Trillions of MBS paper
and PMI companies evaporated and disappeared during the crisis
