He this be figuring, one way or the other, this is his Tombstone moment. To take out the cancer, this final blow could finally tip the scales of justice and doesn't need to worry about the personal consequences anymore. Writing a few books, other offers on the table already, guaranteed retirement program already in place. Time to drain the oil from the C machine and throw them into the trash heap of history. Better yet, drop them to the bottom of the ocean where they belong.
