US calls for switchover to LED light bulbs, says it will save money and environment

What’s in your socket?

It should be an LED light bulb, not an incandescent or CFL bulb, if you want to save the most money and fight climate change, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The agency issued a national call to action on Tuesday to persuade Americans to replace 300 million light bulbs in 2016.

“Collectively, a change-out of this magnitude would save Americans about 1.5 billion dollars in annual energy bills and prevent 17 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions,” the agency said.

Lighting, both inside and out, typically represents one-fourth of a home’s electric bill.

What’s wrong with your old incandescent light bulbs? And weren’t CFL light bulbs being promoted as the environmentally friendly alternative just a few years ago?

Well, with apologies to Thomas Edison, inefficient incandescent bulbs were deemed so energy-sapping that Congress passed a law that allowed only vastly improved incandescent bulbs to be manufactured beginning in 2015.

Most of the incandescents on the shelves today are halogen lights.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs, which may last 10 times longer than incandescents, became the go-to bulbs for many. But they have a glow some do not like, and contain harmful mercury, which made for safe disposal headaches.

In Lancaster County, used CFLs should not be thrown out in the trash. They should be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste facility run by the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority at 1299 Harrisburg Pike. Hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. The drop-off service is free.

LED, which stands for light emitting diode, is now considered the best cost-saving, environmentally friendly bulb. They last 2½ times longer than CFLs, saving consumers money and causing less electricity to be produced by power plants that emit greenhouse gases.

A single LED bulb can save $55 over its lifetime compared to a traditional incandescent bulb, according to EPA.

Like CFLs, which initially were much more expensive than incandescent bulbs, LED bulbs currently cost more than CFLs but are dropping in price. A regular LED light bulb costs about $5.

Perhaps seeing the handwriting on the wall, General Electric earlier this year announced it was phasing out CFL production.

By 2020, light bulbs must be even more energy efficient and some say that will mean the end of incandescent bulbs altogether.
