I have a surgeon friend that did the same thing with an hiv positive patient. I asked him how he did it and he basically told me your hands are your eyes while in surgery. There is a lot of stuff you feel for. He too took anti viral drugs to try to combat any virus infection he could not take the physical toll the drugs took. He did not become infected fortunately. That's a tuff job long hours, lots of insurance, people lives and the threat too your own health... I respect surgeon for there undertaking.
