Decent performance? It leads the world in everything.

Just about everything it leads (other than SPECfp) is due to 6MB of cache. Which is my point. When Intel is in trouble with some of its designs, look for cache to hide / lessen it. All the fabs you mentioned are IMO an insurance policy so that it can be done. Cash, I mean cache, cures all ills, and if some of the Intel designs look ill, Intel can always apply the medicine.
