I'm (very slowly) reading Boswell's "Life of Samuel Johnson." Johnson was offended by a suggestion that critic Thomas Edwards was a better writer than Dr. William Warburton. Johnson responded: “[T]here is no proportion between the two men; they must not be named together. A fly, Sir, may sting a stately horse and make him wince; but one is but an insect, and the other is a horse still.”
