PODRAS is minor feature, prevents accidental overdose of intact tablets. IPCI's presentation says PODRAS is "Designed to prevent overdose when more pills than prescribed are swallowed intact." Notice it says intact.

According to patent, PODRAS consist of two coatings, one acidic coating and one alkaline coating. So if the two coatings are crushed, I guess PODRAS fails. I would guess something acidic would counter-act the alkaline outer-coating like drinking soda pop or vinegar, which might trigger the release of the acidic inner-coating. So some drug abuser could probably easily get around the PODRAS coatings.
