Breaking: New interactive golf restaurant en route to Lake Nona (9/12/16)

By Anjali Fluker

Plans are in the works to bring a huge golf element to the tennis and soccer facilities now in the works in Lake Nona’s booming Sports & Performance District.

A concept dubbed Drive Shack is in the works as a 66,000-square-foot, three-story, “interactive golf-themed eating and drinking establishment” for a 15-acre site on the northwest quadrant of State Road 417 and Lake Nona Boulevard. It will include outdoor driving bays, a central bar, a restaurant, a shop, lounges and rentable event space with an outdoor terrace on the upper level, plus about 450 parking spaces, according to documents submitted to the city of Orlando.

Kansas City, Mo.-based Populous is the project architect; Walter P. Moore is the structural engineer; ME Engineers is handling mechanical, electrical and plumbing; and Howe Engineers is the code engineer.

The new project would join the 300-acre Sports & Performance District in Lake Nona, which boasts the $100 million U.S. Tennis Association National Campus, along with the $1.4 million USTA Florida headquarters, the U.S. Professional Tennis Association facility and the $20 million Orlando City Soccer Club training facility— all of which now are being built or designed.

The name Drive Shack is line with a new global golf entertainment company announced last November by New York-based Newcastle Investment Corp., which is managed by an affiliate of real estate firm Fortress Investment Group LLC. Here’s more from that announcement:

Newcastle and Taylor Made Golf Co. Inc. confirmed their intention to create an innovative global golf entertainment company, Drive Shack Holdings LLC. The two companies have entered into a memorandum of understanding under which Newcastle and TaylorMade will work together to develop and market Drive Shack locations. Drive Shack intends to provide an active entertainment outlet that consists of technologically enhanced golf ranges with hitting suites as well as bars and restaurant areas.

Meanwhile, New York-based Drive Shack Lake Nona LLC filed an update to its legal entity name on Sept. 1. It originally was incorporated in June as a foreign limited liability corporation.
