Don't forget to mention the Coverdell Education Savings Account (ESA). You can contribute up to $2,000 per year and the money grows tax-free until distribution. This account can be used not only for higher education expenses but also for elementary and secondary education. Also, in addition to tuition this fund can also be used for room and board, books, equipment and supplies.

This is a self managed fund whereby monies can be invested in stocks, mutual funds, savings accounts, etc.

If your child turns out to be a high school flunkie you only pay taxes on the account earnings when you book that long awaited Caribbean vacation.
