Distance relative to power would seem to be a compelling reason for trying to get the antenna(s) as close as possible to the lens. However, the pad and/or clamshell overcase would not have any issues with power since they can effectively be plugged into the wall.

I fully believe that it can and will work the way I described it.

The problem is that it would not be covered by their patent...

A good patent attorney should work with an inventor to think of all possible embodiments. Often other ideas that are spawned by the original idea are superior and do not infringe the original patent.
