Maintaining spending control is the key. When you go back and look historically on how all the past countries lost their grip on retaining control of their reserve currency status it boiled down to abusive/excessive spending. Most of it stemming from wars.

This country has gone down that path since we went off the gold standard, which in itself was a control on spending. Now look at the debt we've piled up since then. IMO both parties have contributed to the debt and now it would appear too late to reverse our problem. They're going to drive it off the cliff. Remember the movie Thelma and Louise. LOL
