Pasco headed for SK (don't tell Ashraf)

First AMD, now Nvidia lets Samsung fab. Doesn't look to me that TSMC is superior in process tech, right Ashraf?

Samsung clearly signaled in its last conf call that they want to extend their foundry business away from processors, into other areas such as automotive. Looks like full foundry to me.

Maybe it's about time to think about a short on TSMC. A bit early maybe, but this is certainly going to cost them market share as well as price cuts, what Samsung has no issues with (just have a look at what they do with memory).

Where the hell is Intel in this? Why doesn't this company get a single thing done right at the moment? Silence about mobile, Altera and foundry in general are not the way such a company should communicate to shareholders. I really wonder why analysts never ask such critical questions in the conference calls.

Besides: Ashraf thinks that Intel isn't quitting mobile. How about some clear and official statement about this, after spending billions without any reward?

If I wouldn't think that PC is likely to recover finally (I think gamers play a significant role here) and see some potential for the memory business, I would drop the stock and stay at the sidelines (it still brought me a gain in stock price of about 70% as of now)

I still think it is not too late for Intel to enter mobile and foundry, but they really need to change something about their attitude for this to work out. Maybe I'll wait for one last try in mobile and some good news on foundry (especially Altera - they are about to destroy their most expensive acquisition of a really great company).

Stacy Smith assures Intel 5G leadership.......I seem to recall Stacy Smith extolling Broxton/SOFIA

Mollenkoph begs to differ

Well, sure he does. I see no way Qualcomm can protect its huge source for royalties. This isn't going to happen for 5G. Too many players, too many strong players who can contribute their own patents. Qualcomm was lucky in the past that standards have been accepted that they could benefit so much from. Wasn't it half of their business just from royalties? That's not going to repeat, believe me. The Asians won't let them do it again.

Qualcomm may have a leadership in 5G but that doesn't mean they can dominate the market like they did with 3 and 4G. Every strong player in the market is about to integrate his own modem and price competition is going to get stiffer. Maybe volume will compensate for it, but I don't see this IoT explosion with 5G in the near future. Even Wifi based smart home stuff currently is really expensive and too complex for the majority of users.

Qualcomm seems like another good short to me. The current enthusiastic market can be expensive for shorties, though. I'll give it a thought ...
