HANDHELD trace detection instrumentation has been used by the military, ATF, DEA and security forces around the globe since the early 2000's.

These devices employ similar technologies developed by Yost Research to detect trace elements/VOC's in parts-per-trillion and research has recently pushed the detection envelope into the part-per-quadrillion range. Basically, that would be like sniffing out a single tree on earth.

Several variations of these HANDHELD devices currently exist developed by various manufacturers using  FAIMS, IMS, chromatography and spectrometric techniques (just to name a few) with a detector and ionizer as you referenced in your "wake up call". (Dr. Boock our resident expert could confirm  that).

So to proclaim the HANDHELD technology doesn't exist, is impossible or won't exist or that a refrigerator sized component is required is without basis.
