I have a question on dividends. I am a first time investor and am really trying to do my research and foot work here. One question I have in the way here of dividends is this:

There are usually two dates that matter in regard to divdends, which is ex-date and payout date. Obviously I know I have to purchase or own stock before the ex-date. Do I still have to own the stock when the payout date comes around? Any help anyone can provide with my inquiry would be most appreciated thank you for your time.
