Bigworld, Thanks. They haven't given him any IV nutrition yet, but after 3 or 4 days in the hospital the xray showed the obstruction had mainly cleared, so yesterday they tried removing the naso-gastric suction tube and gave him 2 meals of an oral liquid diet. But unfortunately today they had to reinsert the NG tube and then moved him into the ICU. He had been fairly healthy and was still able to drive, but by 88 I guess the body can really decline quickly.

Last year my mom passed away from a GI blockage associated with a hernia. The surgery was successful but she was 93 and unfortunately didn't recover. I think when they have to start the 'feeding tube' it's the beginning of the end, at least it was for her.
