There are many mines with platinum as a primary, secondary or
tertiary product in the West as shown using the USGS MRDS
(PT mines are indicated with purple pickaxes):



Here's a guy who can find it too:


If you watch the video you will see that platinum mines are not rare, and are located in nearly every continent. A bunch are scattered around the southwest and close to Skull Valley. It is certain the Bagdad mine produces it as a byproduct of copper production.
