Man Charged with Contempt for Comment Written on Check
38-year-old Michigan resident Robert Militzer is facing up to a month in jail if convicted on charges of contempt, after Berkley District Court got a $10 check in the mail from him for a parking fine. The memo line read "BULL (expletive) MONEY GRAB."
Militzer said he always obeyed the signs at night in front of his friend's house, but claimed they were gone when he was ticketed. He said, "I thought they were gaming me, collecting fines without giving people a fair chance to avoid it."
He is being accompanied by an ACLU attorney in order to argue that his comment is protected speech. His "choice of words may not be the best, and it may offend some people, but it's not illegal," said lawyer Elsa Shartsis.
