When it comes to whiskey drinks, nothing hits the spot quite like an Old Fashioned. The cocktail, made with muddled sugar, bitters, whiskey, and garnished with a twist of citrus, is typically served in a lowball glass named specifically for the drink itself (so you know it's legitimate). Considering that today is World Whiskey Day, we tapped bartender Joaquín Símo of craft cocktail bar Pouring Ribbons in N.Y.C., for his imaginative riff on the classic recipe.

"The glory of an Old Fashioned is that it's barely adulterated booze," he tells InStyle. "But it's the specificity of the ingredients that makes it magical. By adding the complex green herbal notes of these classic French Alpine liqueurs to the spiced honeyed smoothness of 12-year-old pot-stilled Irish whiskey, I hope to enrich the classically smooth maltiness that makes this bottling a benchmark on its own, or in a cocktail." Read on for the full breakdown, and cheers!
