I worked for a publicly traded company for all of my adult life - IBM for 32 years.

I didn't "dismiss" the importance of accounting or accountants.

You can delegate authority, and I often did. You can't delegate responsibility, or accountability. And I never tried to. If we screwed up, it was my butt on the line. There was no tolerance for blaming subordinates.
