KNL may be "more familiar" to program to, but CUDA is so popular these days that I'm not convinced Intel can coast on inferior hardware and use X86 compatibility as a crutch.


You do know about the drawbacks of doing general computing on graphics chips, don't you? They are different to general purpose CPUs for a reason. There are algorithms that can not really benefit from graphics card acceleration. It's not that the graphics chip guys have found some secret sauce. Graphics cards are built for a specific task: Processing streams of data independently on many parallel computing engines. This only works when there is no interdependency in the data of the calculations, which often is not the case and therefore those GPU accelerators often are not really helping. A general compute architecture does a lot better at such tasks. I guess that is what Intel is targeting and that makes sense, since only a few supercomputers really are dedicated to specific types of calculations. Flop figures don't mean much in that regard.
