Say you are up $100K, you in theory don't have to pay taxes until you cover. So I have heard of investors trying to suppress price so it never recovers and therefore never pay taxes. Even if a company never goes out of business, I have heard of shorts rolling the dice and never paying taxes since they never officially covered their position.
