After a rough 2015, Qualcomm looks like it might be on the verge of a comeback this year.

The smartphone chipmaker reported results that surpassed expectations on Wednesday. The stronger-than-expected results came following a surprisingly strong showing at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Nearly all major handset makers including Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, and HTC, among others, featured the chip SNAPDRAGON in their flagship devices.

Qualcomm's resolution of its dispute with LG Electronics, as well as the conclusion of a number of licensing agreements in China, will help set the company up for a strong second quarter. Meanwhile, emerging markets will continue to see robust shipment growth. India and Indonesia, in particular, will help fuel a large share of the shipments growth within the global smartphone market over the next few years.
