Analysts Assail United During 1Q Earnings Call -- Market Talk

11:52 ET - JPMorgan analyst Jamie Baker said during United's (UAL) 1Q conference call that the carrier delivered a "pretty unimpressive" 2Q guide and continues to underperform its peers. "Does mediocrity suffice? Or is something more radical, a change of course, required?" New CEO Oscar Munoz didn't lose his cool. "I'll go with mediocrity for 200," he quipped before noting that UAL "needs to be a bit-more disruptive in the market. There is no one standing by here and waiting for things to get better." Wolfe Research's Hunter Keay suggested that UAL's margin gap may be permanent and asked if the company is "just too big" and needs major surgery to shrink. Munoz responded that UAL "is not ready to concede anything" and pledged to reveal more of his turnaround plans on a June 21 investor call.
