The main point is the use of QDs for display IMO. When QDs were first discovered I'm sure the first thing they thought of wasn't "let's make TVs with this". Even Hartlove talked about how many different products they tried before settling on displays. If Nanosys patented the idea first (with help from Cal and MIT) I believe they'll have plenty to stand on in the suit.

Other companies can still pursue solar, medical, etc...and all the other far-fetched academic ideas that are posted on here.
