Elio even bills the 3 wheeler as a secondary vehicle because it doesn't have the capacity for families and hauling.
The big three have the argument to just buy a Focus, a Dart etc... that gets good mileage yet hauls 4 people, a child seat and a load of groceries rather than licensing and insuring TWO vehicles(one for commute and the other for utility). Elio is more like a enclosed Can Am Spyder. Another downside to needing another vehicle for hauling is parking space. Apartment dwellers in particular have limited parking. Students in room sharing situations are very limited. Trying to shove 4 Elios in 2 parking spaces could be a problem.
Elio has to fear many other manufacturers. I think they may be first to market, in the USA, with a enclosed 3 wheeled vehicle, that has decent amenities, but far from being the only player in town. Do a search for 3 wheel concepts and see how many others have already played with the idea. I'm sure European and Asian markets would have their own brands in no time. Elio doesn't stand a chance over there.
I hope Elio makes it, I really do, but the more one thinks about it the less likely it seems to be possible. I certainly won't touch it now at this level.
