Gregory was facing extortion from Negan (supposedly). Lets remember, Gregory is a douchebag. Gregory didn't even ask for Rick's help. Rick came in and offered to broker a deal, actually Maggie did because Rick knew he couldn't work with Gregory. So, Rick agreed to get rid of Negan merely to take his place. Had it been a one time thing then fine, but apparently it wasn't. It was taking Hilltops stuff for killing off the Satellite people.

So, to use your recap....

So Maggie meets with the smarmy Gregory. Jesus told Gregory that Alexandria’s food supply was “challenged” but knows they have a good arsenal. Greg is happy to help, but can’t give things away for free. He suggests they work at the Hilltop in exchange for supplies. One gets the feeling that Gregory expects sexual favors to be included in the “work,” and Maggie puts a stop to it. She wants to trade; he dismisses her. “We’re doing fine; are you?

So, Rick came to Gregory, not the other way around. As Gregory says, they're doing fine. Moving on....

The group heads outside, where they are met by Ethan and a couple of others Who had just come back from meeting with Negan. Negan said they were “light” on their delivery. They killed several members of the team,

OK, Negan didn't kill them randomly. Did Gregory try to screw over Negan or was Negan getting greedy? We don't know, but we do know Gregory is a douche.

They made a lot of demands and threats, and beat a 16-year-old kid to death because they needed to “understand.” Gregory, not great at confrontation, made a deal: half of everything they have goes to the Saviors. In return, the Saviors don’t attack the Hilltop.

So, Negan is offering protection for half their stuff. Typical Mob move.

Gregory is laying in his antique wood-carved bed like some monarch of yore. He wants to know why Maggie and her group think they can do what they couldn’t. He also doesn’t know if Craig is worth the trouble. He is weak and Gregory doesn’t think he wants him back.

More Gregory douchebaggery.

Negan is expecting more and more supplies from them, and pretty soon they will have nothing left and the Saviors will attack. She wants to leave with half of everything they have or the deal is off.

So Maggie demands the exact same thing Negan is getting. Again, I thought it might be a one time thing, but Rick comments in another episode of his plan to just take stuff they want from Hilltop (guess you can look in the recap for that) Here ya go, from Rick....

" Mm.
This is good.
Mm, it is.
Jesus came through.
They all did.
And they're all gonna keep coming through.

Just my opinion, of course.
