This is my thought on that question. Is SPORT an advancement in robotic surgery platforms. Yes. But that's not what makes me most excited about SPORT. IMO it's a huge leap forward compared to traditional laparoscopic instrumentation. If the costs per procedure are in line with traditional laparoscopic cases then you now have instruments, snake arms, that are far superior to traditional rigid laparoscopic inst. Over the years I have seen the struggles with the limitations of these instruments and I believe that SPORT will be able to do the cases faster, with less bleeding and trauma to the tissues and lead to better pt outcomes. Less OR time and less time under anesthesia. I recently scrubbed in a difficult laparoscopy in which the surgeon struggled with the the instruments and felt that the case may have been done in a third of the time with the dexterity and flexibility of the SPORT system. The ability for a surgeon to operate through a single port with instruments that can maneuver over, under, around and behind structures is something that I think surgeons will absolutely come to love. I feel it is "laparoscopic surgery optimized". Why operate with sticks when you can use snakes?
