Not to say that a placer mine shouldn't be tested properly and a feasibility study done before a decision to mine or not mine. The sampling is best done by taking bulk samples (the bigger the better) and running them through the same kind of plant that the actual mining will utilize. This is usually done by digging test pits.

Deeper sampling can be done by drilling, but if the gold is coarse (nuggets), drilling can be unreliable. In addition, placer gold tends to occur in narrow channels, which are next to impossible to predict. Gravity, magnetics, and other geophysical methods like the ones supposedly used at PYHH's claim are also unreliable.
