Thanks for the follow up heroguy, and also duke for throwing in the concerns. I feel I better clear up that point of concern so as not to give the perception it is ok to 'pander' to middle school children.

As I mentioned, I've been a teacher a while and one thing you don't do is what duke stated - that will be a quick way to get fired.

I'd like to share a bit about how it came up, but also some insight into the kids as a whole. How it came about (me asking what they'd spend) is we were waiting to get on our bus to go to a class. It was 8th grade, that should be clarified - not 6th graders, and trust me it is a huge difference in maturity. I never point blank them in regards to these types of things. They were actually talking about Markiplier a couple months ago, somthing about a video he posted and a few of them were all fired up. I have no idea what the video was but they are quick to point out, when I played dumb and asked who he was - they said, "oh he just makes youtube videos about video games.", while another student said, "no, he's the guy that gets drunk and makes fun of video games." With that one I just shook my head and said, I don't want to know any more about that part. But others started to chyme in about Pewdipie - another major youtuber. This lead to some decent back and forth about both and what they are about - the kids did all the talking, and they did eventually point out they both are about giving to charity. That's when I said I think I know who you guys are talking about and mentioned hearing he might be in a comic. That's when they got excited. So I simply asked, you guys would buy a comic if he was in it?? Well, consensus in that group of 20 was a yes. So my next question was about what they think they would spend on it and if they had that chance. At that point the bus showed up and never talked about it again. (and that still holds true as of today even though I hear them bring him up from time to time)

That whole exchange was about 5 minutes. Middle school kids are an interesting group, and to gain and keep their trust you have to show interest in things they are interested in, but not in the way that crosses the line - it is simply showing you care about them outside of the academics. This just happened to be one of those times they were talking about something they like and I happened to hear it and decided go a little further.

Sorry for the long post, but I thought I would shed some light on how things go with getting into the middle school kids interests. I will say, markiplier is not the only one out there they'd spend their allowance on. Pewdipie for example - we had kids pick him as a social studies fair project (influential people). They wanted to raise money to send to him personally - and that was some 6th graders!

I for one would not underestimate the power of that group, but that being said, I do agree, they will flip in a heartbeat if something doesn't fit for them or something better comes along - and they definitely are more the digital type, although there are quite a few who get into the graphic novels as school. I see that group as just a piece of the puzzle and you just ride it as long as it lasts. REDG should never see Markiplier as the long term savior, but a short term one, whether it is a year, two, or maybe even five - definitely! The potential is there - yes, I know, been hearing potential for three years! smile After today's update - potential is looking better.

Thanks again for taking the time to take in my comments. Have a great weekend.
