3D Success.

Technology

Heard about 3D Seismic technology and don't know what it is? 3D is a high tech tool utilized by companies to find oil and gas reserves. It is a process by which land is "viewed" from inside the earth for geographic study.

These studies help oil and gas experts find large reserves, either to support or "prove up" existing notions or to reveal suspected but unproven reserves. There are "charged' line and multiple "read only" parallel lines of geophones used in 3D seismic surveys. The charged lines shoots dynamite charges, which forces sound waves down through the subsurface.

The sound waves penetrate strata with different properties at various speeds, and then reflect back to the surface off the granite basement. Geophones on the charged lines read the waves reflected straight back from the flat subsurface, which read the sound waves at angles from uneven structures.

The multiple lines determine the size, shape and location of potential reefs and structures. The success rate of 3D seismic surveys in finding oil and gas is 75%.
