After listening to the Honeywell webcast on using Arcam EB and reviewing the manufacture of turbine blades it seems, though I can't be sure, the Arcam still has a technology, FAA approval, moat for its process. The powder-fed Arcam process generates parts with metal grain structure oriented in the direction of AM (from the Honeywell webcast). Arcam makes what looks to be the highest quality Ti powders available (Honeywell again). Both grain structure and powder manufacture are to their advantage. I can't find the link right now but I believe Avio has FAA approval to manufacture EB 3d manufactured turbine blades for GE's new engine. To change to wire-fed Sciaky manufacture means re-applying for approval.

All the same, after looking at Sciaky, I have to change my investment assumptions a bit. Previously Arcam appeared to be alone in 3d EB (especially) Ti-Al manufacture for the foreseeable future. I'm not so sure now so am assuming more risk in that assumption.

It's not easy to find information on Arcam and I've found this discussion group to be most helpful. A general thanks for that.
