Samsung makes good phones and I know a lot of people with S4s. They came out with bigger screens long before Apple did and they had expandable flash slots (or at least they used to) and they're a realistic alternative to iPhones.

One thing about most non-Apple Phones - finding cases is a pain because the production runs are so low. You can go into a mall kiosk and find cases for iPhone 4s, 5s, 6s, etc. pretty easily and you will have a ton of choice. My daughter went to get a case for her Google Galaxy Nexus at Best Buy many years ago. They had one black case and it was fairly expensive. It's easy to get cases for Samsung phones too because they do so much volume.

There's a lot that I like about Android. One of the things that I most like is customizable home pages so that you can get a lot of information at a glance when you turn on your phone - you don't need to go into Apps. Another is that you can access the file system from a PC - Apple doesn't have the concept of exposing the file system to you.

Android supports mice and keyboards via BlueTooth - this may or may not be important to you.

The main downside of Android Phones (excluding the Nexus line) is getting updates. A coworker just got his Lollipop upgrade from Verizon, over a year after it was released. You're at the mercy of the OEMs and carriers on updates and they can take a long time or never provide you with updates for your phone. Apple makes releases available to all phones - the carriers aren't involved.
