Ta-Nehisi Coates: 'I Will Be Voting for Senator Sanders'

The Atlantic's Ta-Nehisi Coates said in an interview with Democracy Now! that he would vote for Bernie Sanders in this year's Democratic primary. Coates is a favorite writer of President Barack Obama.

"I will be voting for Senator Sanders. I've tried to avoid this question, but yes, I will be voting for Senator Sanders," he said, noting that he doesn't think much is accomplished by trying to separate his personal preferences from his public life.

Coates added that he is "thrilled" a candidate such as Sanders has found popularity in the party, and that he can reconcile his disagreement with the Vermont senator's position on reparations with his own opinion that Sanders is the preferable option for president.

"I'm thrilled to see an actual radical, uniquely left-wing option in the Democratic party," Coates said. "If we on the left can't embrace this idea that black folks have been specifically injured, and that there should be specific remedies for that injury, then we have no hope. We really, really have no hope. So forgive me for expecting more of Senator Sanders than I expect of [Secretary] Clinton, but I do."

Coates published a popular critique last month of Sanders that garnered attention from the New York Times and elsewhere.

Referring to Clinton, the author added, "I get really, really concerned when I see somebody taking $600,000 in speaking fees from Goldman Sachs, but not release what they're actually saying."
