Elizabeth Warren takes another swipe at Mary Jo White — and Barack Obama

SEC is ‘suffering under weak leadership’

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, left, and Securities and Exchange Commission Chairwoman Mary Jo White.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren still isn’t a fan of Securities and Exchange Commission Chairwoman Mary Jo White, as she took another dig at the regulator as well as at President Barack Obama in an op-ed released Friday.

Warren didn’t mention White by name in her commentary in the New York Times ( http://tinyurl.com/hs9r6ka ), which argues that the Obama administration’s record on enforcement falls short even as it has, in her words, “a substantial track record” on agency rules and executive action.

Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat, said the securities regulator is “suffering under weak leadership.” She said the SEC was far behind on issuing congressionally mandated rules to avoid the next financial crisis and lamented the waivers it’s granted to “lawbreaking companies.”

A spokeswoman for the SEC didn’t immediately return a message.

Warren framed her op-ed in the context of the presidential race. “Voters should also ask which presidential candidates they trust with the extraordinary power to choose who will fight on the front lines to enforce the laws,” she wrote. Warren has yet to endorse any of the Democratic presidential aspirants.

It’s not the first time Warren has criticized White. Last summer, the senator criticized the agency ( http://tinyurl.com/zyulqba ) over failing to finalize rules, waivers, settling without getting admissions of guilt, and White’s recusals because of both the SEC chief’s previous law firm employment and her husband’s current law practice.
