I've been involved way too many times with getting new as well as existing companies ISO certified.
I agree it's a lot of work but not too difficult. It's just a matter of:
1) Documenting what you say you do. 2) Follow a few of the required standards. 3) Wine and dine the ISO certification auditors.
The most difficult process of being ISO certified (IMO), especially in larger companies, is training the employees so they are aware of the QMS and follow the processes as documented.
Eighty percent of the population is ignorant and the other twenty percent live off of them.
