There are many benefits of Silicon Nitride, I'll elaborate to the best of my memory and knowledge but checkout the site as well:
http://amedica.com/si3n4/benefits_of_silicon_nitride/

The material has a very flat/ideal surface topography and it's extremely hard.

PEEK and Titanium-alloy have greater wear.. which can produce nasty by-products, especially when we are talking about heavy metals. This leads to poisoning of the body and joint articulation issues.

The tiny, unintentional blemishes on the material surface (far less-prominent for Silicon Nitride) provide an excellent breeding ground for bacteria because they are too small for capillaries to grow into , impeding the ability for the body to carry infection-fighting cells (macrophages?) to the area.

I fully agree that this is a disruptive material.. I also suspect that a buyout is likely and would explain why we are seeing such strong buying pressure ahead of FDA approval. I will not be surprised in the least to see this jumping around a dime at a time in the near future if this is the case, as the effective float will only shrink while % change must be significant enough to elicit traders to trade!

p.s.
I have notes I will find and share if enough people want to see them
