wbmw, in 1999 Intel took the P4 design and cut a bunch of performance features so they could move up the time to market. This was in response to Athlon. You can trust my memory on this, or not, as you wish.

Edit: You don't have to rely on my memory. I see that Haddock already posted a reference to the stuff Intel had to take out of the design in order to rush the chip to market -
