Fortunately I was working for a company with good benefits and I opted for the additional long term disability insurance. The best $1.65 every two weeks I've ever spent in my life. Ending the first six months of short term disability I got SSDI approved by handing them a stack of bills (paid) around $110,000. The SSDI check, alone, would have had me in poverty. The additional check through the disability coverage I purchased through work allows me to make 60% of my last annual income (combined with SSDI) making things a lot more bearable. I've been on chemo since Sept of 2011 with no end in site. The premiums are pretty huge but I would have been bankrupt by Feb 2012 (colon resection) if it hadn't been for the insurance. I'm a product of modern cancer treatment although I've suffered some extreme issues due to radiation damage (30 pre-op treatments). I had ten Stereotactic Radiation treatments to my lungs in November...I was concerned I would lose my voice but so far I'm still singing like a bird. Life is good...much better if you have good insurance...sorry so long...peeps need to know...you need insurance ...
