When you find the mechanism for applying pressure on the Pentagon and Congress to halt the SERVE project, or to please stop and insert the Macintosh platform, be sure to let us know, so the rest of us can watch your progress.

You may find it an uphill battle, though. You must convince lawmakers that it's worthy to impinge the right to vote of the men and women who are fighting and risking their lives for our country.

I almost said fighting and "dying" for our country right there, but, well, once you die, you can't vote, normally, anyway, except in special circumstances.

The right of these people to vote is specifically addressed by the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) of 1986. And again, the SERVE project is congressionally mandated. Ten states have already signed up for 2004. After being reviewed in Congress in 2005, a decision will be made for more massive rollout in 2008.

As we saw in the last election, it doesn't take much to swing even a Presidential race. That's another reason this has widespread support. There can be up to six million absentee voters in the military or living overseas. That's the ultimate target... allowing absentee voters to vote regardless of the vagaries of the mail system in Qatar or Korea.

And, as you know from the business world, compatibility with Macintosh is usually not implemented until a rollout to Windows is achieved. So, if you want to see absentee voters have the ability to vote from their Macs someday, root for SERVE to succeed.

It's good for the computer and internet world in general that this is happening.

Good luck with your mission.
