-- This guy has a good article which is pretty informative. Fills in some of the other details the leangains guy doesn't touch on. Working out fasted boosts muscle growth as well - which subsequently increases metabolism. Fasting increases metabolism slightly for the first 3 days and has no negative effects on your muscles for the first 24 hours.

just a start but the other article I sent on Saturday has a few more details including some information about how fasting is beneficially for the brain as well.
Generally, the idea is that our genetics were selected at a time when we didn't eat all day throughout everyday. Hunger increases metabolism slightly and actually induces the formation of new brain cells. I suppose a genetic selection for a boosted "last chance" to get food is a good theory. More brain power to exploit surroundings + athleticism.
