(After reading further into today's messages I see that others had similar thoughts on viral marketing.)
William,
I wonder if they aren't promoting on purpose to see what kind of responses they get by viral marketing.
If you are at the counter, you are already a customer.
They are interested in getting new people in to their stores to increase sales and profits.
The $5 gift card maybe a carrot to get the new person in the store with the hope that they become regulars.
