Shifts in Robotic Surgery

The report reflects that 2015 was a buzzy year for robotic surgery with newcomers reportedly close to entering the general surgery space. Potential new robotic surgery entries may be here soon from Titan Medical, TransEnterix, and of course the much-discussed Verb Surgical,a collaboration between Google and Johnson & Johnson. This is in addition to the offerings from market leader/creator Intuitive Surgical—the da Vinci Xi, da Vinci Si, and da Vinci Si-e.And,the authors note, since many in-use da Vinci Si models from Intuitive Surgical are near the end of their life cycle, "C-suite and surgery leaders are assessing their robotic surgery programs and planning for future growth and technology platforms."

To executives thinking about the next step in robotic surgery, the authors urge: "If your hospital is not in immediate need of a new surgical robot, you may wish to consider waiting a few years to see whether any new additions enter the surgical robot marketplace." Also, they write that these administrators should decide whether they can hold off on changes until competitive offerings become clear, understand what surgical indications are necessary for their hospitals, and conduct a "nuanced analysis" of costs, time management, and efficiency.
