Deann: the easiest of all organic fertilizers is leaf mold. It can be made by flipping a pile of damp leaves every day. Sometimes all one needs is two weeks. The ph is near neutral. The lazy man's system is to go into the woods, etc. and scrape some from the forest floor. One thing to remember about composting is that the pile is measured by the latest additions. This is why folks have a number of piles.
