OLED and LPL,

Why Universal Display (OLED) Stock is Gaining Today

Shares of Universal Display Corp. (OLED - Get Report) are jumping 7.18% to $56.12 early Wednesday afternoon after a report said Apple (AAPL) would begin using organic light emitting diode (OLED) screens in its iPhones.

The Trenton, NJ-based company researches, develops and commercializes OLED technologies and materials for displays of wearables, smartphones, tablets, televisions and solid-state lighting applications.

LG Display Co. (LPL) and Samsung Electronics Co.'s (SSNLF) panel-making unit are said to be close to finalizing a deal with Apple to begin supplying OLED screens for iPhones, the Electronic Times reports.

LG Display, Samsung Display to supply OLED screens for iPhones

LG and Samsung Display are close to a final agreement with Apple for the screens, the Electronic Times report said, adding the two Korean firms plan a combined 15 trillion won ($12.8 billion) in capital expenditure to build up OLED production capacity over the next two to three years.

Apple will likely provide some funding to both firms to help with the investments, the paper added.

Comment: Don't be surprised if Samsung, and perhaps Google, offers OLED on their phones and tablets before Apple.

Note: RGB OLED is the next and best LED display technology to emerge. And that's before it's bumped up to 4k resolution. Not that it matters because 4k isn't available on TV, but could be on DVD (though it could be firmware derived from 1080, which means it's not really 4k). But computers can drive 4k, but who puts a widescreen TV on a computer? Well, I do use a 27" screen on my computer and that's bigger than the TV I had 6-yrs ago.
